Perpignan liberated at 7.00am and according to the weather map of PiPa, first a North-easterly wind turning East and then South-east at the coast of Northern France and Belgium. This meant that for the first International here in South-Holland, you had to be at 1150 km between 9.00 and 9.30 pm and have risen above 1175 meters to win from the first bird in France. Once Sunday morning, your chances were gone, because in Zeeland and Limburg birds would already have arrived the night before.
With the last part in front of the wind and in the dark, the first arrived in North Holland on Sunday morning. Here in the fond club “De Glazen Stad” we had to wait a little longer and the first bird was timed in at 7.35.53 at Wim Schaddé’s from Dooren in Rijnsburg, also the 1st of the section 12 “De Kuststrook”.
It was his first signed in, a robust cock the 04-1940724, which had arrived 2nd in the Barcelona, 7th in the “De Glazen Stad” and 92nd in National Z.L.U. and now the 13th National. The ‘723” a brother of the Perpignan winner raced in Barcelona, making 3rd in the “De Glazen Stad” and 39th National, two brothers what an achievement! Both parents come from a cross of Hans Knetsch x Willem van der Velden, so really Knetsch x Knetsch, because Willem got his whole base from there. On mothers side there is “MYLENE” 4th National Barcelona and from her ”ANNET” the 1st National Barcelona. On father’s side 2 times the “90-527” , one of Wim’s Wanroy hens that had already produced some top birds with a cock from Knetsch, which is going back to the “90”, the “Maaskant”, the “Oude Spin” and the “Westerhuis”… all from van Wanroy.
Last week I wrote in the article on Hans Knetsch that Wim has done so well in the last two years in the ZLU races that if he keeps going like this, I might have to visit him soon, and see my prophecy has come true.
Wim and Els have three children and have taken up racing on the fond from their current home since 1989. Els has been a hairdresser with me for many years and this is how I got to know Wim. He regularly looked out for my pigeons, because I left my customers too often in the middle of a treatment when they were due to come in. Els thought that that was not very polite, so asked Wim to step in. Wim even clocked a 9th National of a heavy St. Vincent for me. I am sure that this is where his passion for the Wanroys stems from.

He first tried the nest game, like Willem and Hans, but he did not like it. According to Wim he cannot really air his loft well enough with the double occupation. However, this year he changed his mind and left the hens sitting after Barcelona (as a test) and played everything for Perpignan on eggs. The result was so impressive that he is now in doubt. He sent 15 birds and clocked the following times: 7.35, 8.59, 9.24, 9.58, 10.34, 10.37, 11.07 and 11.18; probably all 9 pigeons in the National results.
You have guessed the breed by now: exclusively Wanroy via Knetsch and Willem van der Velden. He is in contact with these favourite ‘milkers’ every week. The young birds are trained on natour, the yearlings on several mid fond tosses and sometimes full day training and after that, they are sent to Bergerac. As two year olds, they are tested on a particular ZLU and as a three year old they are sent to Barcelona and Perpignan.
Feed is the full bowl system with Mariman Ultra Fond, Bayers fond Olympiade and super diet, the usual snoepzaad (treat seeds) and not much else. Medically, also very little. Yellow cure of 4 days on the first breed and the regular inoculations. Sick birds are removed straight away. He never suffers from ‘thick heads’ or anything else dramatic.
He is a member of “PV. De Rijnmonders” in Katwijk and he plays in section 12 “De Kuststrook”. The question I usually ask: whether there are any remarks with regards to the NPO, I hardly dare ask for being afraid to cause an acute heart failure…. I think I shall have to return to this loft again, given Wim is persistently good and has a loft with high calibre birds. I feel a little proud that I have been a little bit of part of this.
On behalf of the committee and the member of the fond club “De Glazen Stad” our heartiest congratulations!
Wim van Rijk.
