Double Barcelona/Perpignan pigeons in 2007
If you are looking to invest in long distance pigeons - you can do a lot worse than to concentrate on individual pigeons that have performed well twice in the same season. Early pigeons in both the Barcelona International 2007 and the Perpignan International 2007 fall into this category. There are no guarantees of course but being in possession of information about individual pigeons with super performances is a good start.
For the purposes of this study I have confined my selection to those pigeons that have achieved positions twice in the top two percent of each result; pigeons that you could expect to be the base of future champions, The year 2007 was to some degree an unrepresentative year. Barcelona was a fast race. No doubt some early pigeons flew in the night. This favoured the longer flying birds. These may or may not have been the intrinsically the best pigeons in the race for this reason judgement from two races is very important.
To illustrate this point at Barcelona there were only 7 first marked form pigeons in the first 100 places. The Perpignan race on the other hand had twice as many from the same amount. This may be because Perpignan takes place later in the year when pigeons have already shown form but in spite of this I don’t think this accounts for the whole of the discrepancy.
The nature of any race also plays a part. I think it is fair to say Perpignan was a much straighter race but we should remember there has never been a pigeon race that is absolutely fair, in every races there are always many variables.
This year there were five double performing top 2 percent pigeons from the two race, all of them mature pigeons at the height of their power. The five were aged between three and five years, they were all from Belgium.
Of the super five owners the largest entry was from Martin Ravelinghien who entered 35 pigeons at Perpignan. His double performer was third marked of his 35 pigeons. The smallest entry was six pigeons from both Henri Van Neste and Gaston Devooght. These two fanciers entered six pigeons each and both doubles were their first marked pigeons. You could justly say entry numbers per loft did not play a part; further confirmation, if we needed it, that real pigeon talent can only be discovered by assessing performances from more than one race. Reliability is the key indicator of good genes.
