Marseille.

Marseille sets an interesting challenge. The race point is East of the town which means, because of the imposing presence of The Alps, the pigeons probably have to start their journey by flying west.
London
This is a view of the Port of Marseille from Estaque, to the North West of the main town, looking back on the left hand side of the view, at the direction where the pigeons will start their journey.
A direct flight from the race point to London is a journey of about 625 miles but it means crossing mountains in excess of 4,000 ft.
Fortunately the Rhone Valley soon opens up and offers an alternative involving heights of only 1,500 feet but this does increase the distance to about 699 miles.
Another alternative might be to cross over to Narbonne and then follow the Canal du Midi out to Toulouse before striking North. Again this would only involve heights of about 1, 500 ft but would extend the flight to 763 miles or so.
