A Nine Year Old at Barcelona
I always look out for really old pigeons that still score in the big races. I had one myself this year from Tarbes but in my case my hen was only 8ys. One in Belgium this year, a year older and a different sex and in a different race is a 9y cheq cock of that well-known Perpignan expert George Carteus of Ronse in Belgium. This 9y was 53rd National against 13,503 pigeons and 101st International against 27,669 pigeons. The reason I look for old pigeons such as this is that it almost certainly proves the loft is clean and not using chemical help to boost the pigeon. You can't give substances to a pigeon for nine years and still expect it-to get home, never mind perform. I take this to be a sign that the entire loft is also clean.

In 2009 George sent 10 pigeons to Barcelona - this pigeon was his second home, 7th marked out of the 10 he sent. Obviously it could not be a favourite at this age but it confounded its owner by being 2nd home. The first one was a 5y 2nd marked pigeon in 28th place International, timed at 10.09 on the second day. The 9y was timed 39 minutes later at 10.48am doing 925mpm over 656 miles, not bad for a 9y that has learnt a few short cuts in a long career racing from Barcelona and still physically able.
The old truism for all good pigeons of absolute health and a robust constitution still holds good today, as it always did. This pigeon certainly has these attributes in abundance. This pigeon was also 303rd, International Barcelona in 2004.
