The 2009 I.P.R.R. Pigeon of the Year 450+ Miles
In 2009 Dennis Wall ran an excellent competition, on his I.P.P.R. web site, to find the IPRR Pigeon of the Year 450+ Miles . While entry was effectively limited to those who have computer access and visit the site it attracted some really high calibre candidates like “Amoy" GB06N21726 winner of 1st National, 36th International Hens, 333rd International Pau 2009 (544miles) and GB05N38845 CH Hen “Sergeant Cecil” winner of 1st L.S.E.C.C. Tarbes (588 miles) some 2 hours in front of the rest of the field into a North West headwind. By popular vote, and a string of results to commend his choice, the pigeon that edged its way in front of these was Fred Cornwell of Southend on Sea's Blue Chequer cock GB03N35217 “Westwood Turban”
GB03N35217 “Westwood Turban”
In 2003, as a young bird, “Turban” flew two races from Poole and Fareham when he was the 5th bird. As a yearling, in 2004, he was stretched a little more flying Fareham, Fareham, Falaise and Alencon (217 Miles) when he was the 2nd Bird and 7 Hours on the wing. He then went on to Le Ferte Bernard when he was 5th Bird and 8hrs.30 on the wing and finally Tours (288 miles) when he was 5th bird and 10hrs 35 on wing. At Alencon incidentally Fred did not get the liberation time and “Turban” was found in loft.
In 2005 he was sent to Poole, Poole, and Alencon when he was 5th bird then Plymouth followed by Alencon when he was 4th bird. He was then rested from racing for three weeks but exercised around loft. He then had one 25 mile toss on the Sunday and was given his Hen on the Monday morning before being basketed for the N.F.C. Tarbes race on Tuesday. “Turban” was timed on the day, at 21.28, to take 15th Section ‘E’ from 1,142 birds and 69th National from 4,066 birds. He was the only bird into Essex on day one of very few birds on East side of country that day, a magnificent performance.
2006 was a slightly easier year flying Lyndhurst, Poole, Bodmin and Poole before going to Bordeaux where he was the 4th bird. Then in 2007 he was sent to Lyndhurst, Poole and Falaise where he was 3rd bird. Then on to Alencon when he was 4th bird 189th Section and 493rd Open. He then had four weeks off from racing during which time he was exercised around loft and then given his hen again the day before basketing for the N.F.C. Tarbes race. He was 1st bird but Fred was disappointed that he was 141st Section ‘E’ and 611th National because he felt he had not prepared him properly.
2008 would hopefully see a correction to this error and “Turban” was sent to Poole twice and then Falaise where he was the 2nd bird and 100th Section, 541st Open in a strong North East wind. He was then sent to Alencon where he was 3rd bird home followed by another Poole before he had 2 weeks off from racing did his exercising around home. He then had one 35 mile toss on the Sunday before basketing for Tarbes International where he was 2nd bird home, 29th Section and 45th National, so he must have been pretty well prepared.
Which brings us to 2009 and quite a year. First “Turban” was sent to Lulworth Cove, followed by Alencon, with the B.I.C.C., where he was 1st bird, 67th Section 100th National. He was then sent to Plymouth after which he had two weeks exercising around loft with no tosses. He was then given his Hen at lunch time on Monday and basketed for the London South East Classic Club Tarbes on the Tuesday. He returned in style 1st bird to the loft 2nd Section and 2nd Open. “Turban” was one of four birds sent to the Classic and all four were home on second day, three were in the result and the fourth was found in loft on return from striking clocks at 19.30. “Turban” then spent two weeks exercising around loft and sent back to Tarbes for the International. He was sent driving his hen hard, in fact the hen layed her first egg on the evening “Turban” homed. He was timed at 9.37.15 on the second day to win 8th Section from 233 birds 14th National from 406 birds. A great result to round off a wonderful year and make a worthy winner of the 2009 IPRR Pigeon of the Year 450+ Miles you might think but he was not quite finished yet. Two weeks later, with a 25 mile toss the Sunday before basketing, he was off to Perpignan sitting those now 13 day eggs, laid as he returned from Tarbes. Once again he did not disappoint winning 27th Section and 35th National from 275 pigeons and his 19th channel flight. Just what is he going to do in 2010 I wonder?
Fred says of his breeding that his Sire was “Wentworth Nector” bred by Jim Biss, which he purchased as a young bird. He is a full brother to “Hillside Yodle” 2nd National Barcelona 1997, “Hillside Yetis” 3rd National Barcelona 1997 and “Hillside Binder” 14th National Perpignan 1997. “Turban’s” Dam was “Wentworth Special” again bred by Jim Biss and purchased as a young bird. She is half sister to “Espada” 2nd G/Nat San Sebastian, 1st Sectio F 550 miles 5,564 birds in 2001 for Biss & Waite. Her sire was “Hillside Besee” a full brother of “Hillside Turban” 2nd G/Nat Pau 5,427 birds 646 miles when Jim Biss was 1st & 2nd G/Nat in 1993. Dam of “Special” was a G/Dtr of “Crack Perpignan”. Both “Nector” and “ Special” carry the lines of “Hillside Lama” one of Jim Biss’s all time great racer/ breeders.
